I have noticed an increase in negative behavior this week. I have had a lot of referrals come across my desk on students that are not normally in my office. Please discuss this situation with your student. This is a difficult time of the year due to the lousy weather and starting the transition to high school; but we all have to remember that we still have four months of school left. Let's all stay focused and think before we act.

We start break in two days and the first semester has been great. The class of 2014 has a great time during the first semester. They are studying hard and have been in involved in a lot of great sports and activities.

During the second semester, their transition to high school will take place. It is both am exciting and scary time. We will help them through all the steps to make the process easy.

H1N1 flu is about to be upon us and we need to be on top of information regarding it. Here is a comparison to the normal cold symptoms .

Know the Difference between a Cold and H1N1 Flu Symptoms :

Symptom
Cold
H1N1 Flu

Fever
Fever is rare with a cold.
Fever is usually present with the flu in up to 80% of all flu cases. A temperature of 100°F or higher for 3 to 4 days is associated with the H1N1 flu.

Coughing
A hacking, productive (mucus- producing) cough is often present with a cold.
A non-productive (non-mucus producing) cough is usually present with the H1N1 flu (sometimes referred to as dry cough).

Aches
Slight body aches and pains can be part of a cold.
Severe aches and pains are common with the H1N1 flu.

Stuffy Nose
Stuffy nose is commonly present with a cold and typically resolves spontaneously within a week.
Stuffy nose is not commonly present with the H1N1 flu.

Chills
Chills are uncommon with a cold.
60% of people who have the H1N1 flu experience chills .

Tiredness
Tiredness is fairly mild with a cold.
Tiredness is moderate to severe with the H1N1 flu.

Sneezing
Sneezing is commonly present with a cold.
Sneezing is not common with the H1N1 flu.

Sudden Symptoms
Cold symptoms tend to develop over a few days.
The H1N1 flu has a rapid onset within 3-6 hours. The flu hits hard and includes sudden symptoms like high fever, aches and pains.

Headache
A headache is fairly uncommon with a cold..
A headache is very common with the H1N1 flu, present in 80% of flu cases.

Sore Throat
Sore throat is commonly present with a cold.
Sore throat is not commonly present with the H1N1 flu.

Chest Discomfort
Chest discomfort is mild to moderate with a cold.
Chest discomfort is often severe with the H1N1 flu.

The only way to stop the spread of the epidemic is to spread the awareness.

This letter is a reminder regarding two important dates to help you prepare for the creation of your child’s four year high school plan. Please mark the following events on your calendar:

Tuesday, December 1st EXPLORE Results Night Sperreng Middle School
6:30 pm, Cafeteria

This evening is dedicated to a discussion of your child’s EXPLORE test results (taken by your child in September). The EXPLORE test is designed to help students increase their academic readiness for high school by measuring their current achievement in English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. You will learn how to read your child’s score report and additionally, how the results can help you decide high school course selections. YOUR CHILD WILL RECEIVE THEIR SCORE REPORT AT SCHOOL PRIOR TO THE MEETING. PLEASE BRING YOUR CHILD’S EXPLORE TEST RESULTS WITH YOU TO THE MEETING!

The first part of this evening will be exclusively for the current 8th grade parents. Your child’s future high school counselor will be presenting an overview on high school requirements and scheduling. The remainder of the evening provides an opportunity for you to attend an open house hosted by the various high school curricular areas. The purpose of the program is to offer information to parents to aide in course selection for their child’s four year high school plan.

In addition to these meetings, your child will be given assistance from the counseling staff while at school to make their high school plans. They will also participate in guidance lessons designed to help them choose a career pathway that will aid them with their course selections.

We hope to see all of our parents at these important meetings. Together we will prepare your child for the beginning of a rewarding high school experience! If you have any questions, please call me at 729-2400 extension 2520.

Do you look each night at your student's planner? It is a great resource to stay up with what is going on with your student's classes. Develop a routine to take a look at it each night. My son received a planner at his school this year and we have to review it and sign each night. It is a good way for your student to be held responsible for their learning.
